Hurricane Impact Windows

Bringing peace of mind, safety, and security 24/7 365.

Unlike standard double pane windows, impact resistant windows are designed to perform just as the name implies: resist an impact.

Whether you're hunkering down for the approaching hurricane, trying to keep noisy traffic and neighbors at bay, or seeking 24/7 protection, hurricane impact windows are nearly impenetrable.

Laminated Glass

When you buy impact widows, or impact doors with glass inserts, the glass will be what we refer to as "laminated".

Glass manufacturers sandwich polyvinyl butyral (PVB) between 2 panes of normal float glass.

PVB is tough, highly elastic material that also brings added benefits of UV filtration and sound protection.

Shatters - But No Penetration

As you can see from this video, when flying debris strikes laminated glass, it will shatter. However, there will not be any penetration of the glass itself.

This is important to protect the structural integrity of your home. The last thing you want is a hole in your window, with hurricane force winds and water blowing throughout the interior of your home.

Florida Building Code and Impact Protection Requirements

There's a common misconception that you must have impact windows when replacing your windows.

When you are replacing your windows and/or doors, it's imperative to follow building code requirements. Simplistically stated - your home is in one of 3 areas:

  1. Non-Impact Region - no impact protection is required

  2. Wind-Borne Debris (WBD) Zone - protection and installation that meets WBD code requirements is required.

  3. High Velocity Hurricane Zone (HVHZ) - protection and installation that meets HVHZ code requiremens is required.

For example - suppose you live in the WBD region. Theoretically, you could replace your windows with non-impact rated ones - but you would also be required to have an alternative form of WBD approved protection such as hurricane shutters.

It's also important to note that some local municipalities may have different requirements than the state. We always recommend checking with you local building department, or talking with an experienced contractor like My Window and Door Guy who has done work in your area.

Finally - check out our blog post that goes deeper into the different kinds of impact protection, what makes one impact window stronger than another, and more. We also cover in depth code requirements, and how to look upwhat is required for your address.
